How it all works

Our candidates who undertake any form or temporary or contract work do it for a wide range of reasons – as a positive career choice, to fill a gap between jobs or to help with the search for permanent employment, as a way of gaining experience in new sectors – this list goes on and on.

We integrate this service with our permanent offering so we cater for the career freelancers as well as those who are looking for a permanent contract.

Use our job search facility to look for current freelance, contract or interim roles, but these are not always advertised so send us your CV if you would like to be considered for this kind of work.

Freelance work

Freelance generally means short-term work, or work of no fixed duration. Professional freelancers can sometimes invoice clients directly, or you can come onto our payroll and we’ll take care of tax and national insurance.

For some people this is a great career choice, and for others it’s perfect if you’re in-between jobs or want to try-out a new sector or company.

Because freelance happens at short notice it’s not generally suitable for people in permanent work with a notice period. If you’re in work and want a freelance career you’ll generally need to take the plunge and make yourself available!

Freelance work is available for both creative or studio professionals and marketing or account management people at all levels.

The Gallery consultants are a mine of good information about the benefits and pitfalls of freelancing so call us if you’d like to discuss this option, or send us your CV.

Contract work

Contract generally means work of a fixed duration – perhaps as maternity cover, working on a specific project or filling a gap during a recruitment freeze.

Contracts can be arranged weeks in advance so can be relevant if you’re in work with a notice period. This can be appropriate for candidates who are in-between jobs, who want to try a new company or sector or even as a first step towards a freelance career.

People from all disciplines can take advantage of the contract work on offer and a surprising number of fixed-term contracts evolve into permanent positions.

As a contract worker you could be on our client’s payroll or paid by us. At the more senior levels you might take advantage of the services of an umbrella company. We can advise on the options.

Interim management

Interim management is for senior individuals, used by our clients because of their many years’ experience and specific business skills.

Interim managers will often find themselves looking after teams and handling the development of junior colleagues during the course of a contract.

Because of their level of seniority many interim managers have positively selected this as a career choice and work through their own limited companies. Others work through umbrella companies.

It’s rare for us to be asked for an interim manager in a creative discipline, and the roles are generally marketing related for positions such as marketing management or strategy, change management, communications and project management.

Legal information

Freelance, contract and interim candidates all operate under different legal and contractual rules and candidates are often faced with choices that have implications for matters such as holiday pay, sick pay, tax and National Insurance.

Guidance is available on the HMRC (Inland Revenue) website, but we are always pleased to give help and advice that’s relevant to your particular situation.

We can also point you in the direction of relevant suppliers including insurance companies and umbrella companies.

Please read our Legal Information.
